ANY QUESTIONS?

Bill Quigley continues this unfortunate trend with Ten Things the US Can and Should Do for Haiti. Rather than allow error to go uncorrected, I will examine each of Prof. Quigley’s points in light of both our disagreements and agreements. Prof. Quigley’s points are in italics; my responses are in bold type.

One. Allow all Haitians in the US to work.
Um, US unemployment is well into double digits. Where are all the jobs from which the Haitians, alone among people apparently, are being barred?

Two. Do not allow US military in Haiti to point their guns at Haitians.
Agreed. Keep the US military out of Haiti, as well as the other 177 countries in which they presently are garrisoned.

Three. Give Haiti grants as help, not loans. Haiti does not need any more debt.
Agreed. Give Haiti as much grant money as the private sector is willing to provide. The US does not need any more debt to provide unconstitutional foreign aid.

Make sure that the relief given helps Haiti rebuild its public sector so the country can provide its own citizens with basic public services.
Not a word about Haiti developing a wealth-creating private sector? How odd. Is Haiti to become a permanent welfare protectorate?

Four. Prioritize humanitarian aid to help women, children and the elderly. They are always moved to the back of the line. If they are moved to the back of the line, start at the back.
If there were real men in Haiti, this wouldn’t be an issue. If Prof. Quigley wants outsiders to deal with the problem, then someone is going to have to point guns at Haitians.

Five. President Obama can enact Temporary Protected Status for Haitians with the stroke of a pen. Do it.
Yes, do it! Flood the country with more uneducated, diseased (highest rate of tuberculosis in the Western hemisphere), sexually irresponsible (highest rate of AIDS in the Western hemisphere), unassimilable minorities, living on welfare (especially since, as noted above, we’re a bit short of jobs in the US right now), cultivating an entitlement mentality, nursing grievances, making babies (birthright citizens), driving up the crime rate, etc. That should provide ample pretext for the Federal takeover of not only the health care industry, but the entire US economy. Socialist Utopia, here we come!

Six. Respect Human Rights from Day One. The UN has enacted Guiding Principles for Internally Displaced People. Make them required reading for every official and non-governmental person and organization.
Any NGO that’s doing what it should doesn’t have time to wade through this dreck, most of which only applies to governments. I’ll only note the rather bizarre articulation of a “right” to be forced to attend school.

Seven. Apologize to the Haitian people everywhere for Pat Roberts [sic] and Rush Limbaugh.
Not too much argument here. But when do the rest of us get apologies for Aristide, the Duvaliers, or the wonderful leaders who have made sub-Saharan Africa the garden paradise it is today?

Eight. Release all Haitians in US jails who are not accused of any crimes.
Even in post 9-11 Amerika, with its PATRIOT Act, Military Commissions Act, warrantless (in every sense of the word) surveillance, etc., it’s still rather hard to be in jail without being accused of a crime. Law Professor Quigley needs to explain himself here.

Nine. Require that all the non-governmental organizations which raise money in the US be transparent about what they raise, where the money goes, and insist that they be legally accountable to the people of Haiti.
Leave it to a law professor to try to spin a Lawyers’ Full Employment Act out of a natural disaster.

Ten. Treat all Haitians as we ourselves would want to be treated.
That’s a good rule for anyone, anywhere, anytime. You do realize, though, that that requires you to renounce the initiation of force against your fellow man, even if you have the best of intentions?

Gun Sales Up, Murder Rates Down.

Unfortunately, Mr. McPherson places the blame entirely too much on the election of Barack Obama. It is true that His Peacefulness’s elevation to the throne office of POTUS did send people scurrying to gun shops in record numbers: at the time, I worked part-time in a gun shop and witnessed the phenomenon at first hand. The coronation of Emperor Barack I actually began the third phase of our ammo woes.

Phase I was caused by increased industrialization, particularly in China and India, which increased demand for industrial commodities like lead, copper, and tin. I recommend the book Hot Commodities by Jim Rogers if you want the full picture of of the commodities shortage (BTW, food supplies also are at record lows). Ammo was still readily available, we just had to pay more for it.

Phase II began with Dubya’s Grand South Asian Conquest. Ammo disappeared from store shelves as the manufacturers switched over production to satisfy the feral federal government’s demands. Police departments were forced to cancel firearms training and qualification due to uncertain ammo supply. Prices increased sharply.

Phase III, of course, began the day after the 2008 federal elections. Prices skyrocketed, and still stores and ranges had to resort to rationing ammunition sales.

Phase IV will commence soon, as O-BOMB-A! attempts to play Alexander to Dubya’s Philip. “I am Yeswecanias, King of Kings! Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and tremble!” I’d stock up now if I were you (and I am).

USS New York is a Big Deal because its bow is built of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center. While CNN’s bubble-headed uniform groupie Robin Meade was breathlessly rhapsodizing over the ship’s arrival (Was it good for you, too?) I couldn’t help but reflect on the legalized theft and crony capitalism that the ship glorifies. There also is the historic significance–unintended, I’m sure–of the latest tool of imperial force projection making its debut on the anniversary of the assassination of Ngo Dinh Diem.

I wonder if the people whose property was stolen under the guise of eminent domain, for the benefit of the Rockefeller brothers and their cronies, would be as enthusiastic as Ms. Meade for the latest incarnation of that theft. I wonder if those who have been on the receiving end of unwarranted US government aggression will see that ship’s bow as a symbol of “what’s good about America?”

We now know the terrorists killed as few people as they did because, instead of sticking to fire-and-movement, they stopped to torture a number of their victims before killing them.

The privilege of murdering foreigners (or Americans, if there are no convenient foreigners) who have done nothing to harm or threaten America is the greatest honor and duty of any American. Gays should not be denied their rightful place in this glorious enterprise.

America’s war-whooping “conservatives” will embrace this soon and effortlessly enough, just as they have the rest of the Left’s agenda when it comes wrapped in the Glory of War: women in combat; taxes; institutionalized lying; deficit spending; government control of business and industry; surveillance, snitching, and forced conformity; submission of the individual to the collective; breakdown of family and traditional morality; &c.

Don’t hesitate, Mr. President. Just Do It.
