Another of the gun grabbers’ rotten claims falls, as a record year for gun and ammunition sales produces a lower homicide rate.

Gun Sales Up, Murder Rates Down.

If you are a regular shooter, you already know that ammunition supplies are low relative to demand, resulting in scarcity and high prices. Over at the National Association for Gun Rights Blog, M.L. McPherson has written a piece on the economics of the current situation.

Unfortunately, Mr. McPherson places the blame entirely too much on the election of Barack Obama. It is true that His Peacefulness’s elevation to the throne office of POTUS did send people scurrying to gun shops in record numbers: at the time, I worked part-time in a gun shop and witnessed the phenomenon at first hand. The coronation of Emperor Barack I actually began the third phase of our ammo woes.

Phase I was caused by increased industrialization, particularly in China and India, which increased demand for industrial commodities like lead, copper, and tin. I recommend the book Hot Commodities by Jim Rogers if you want the full picture of of the commodities shortage (BTW, food supplies also are at record lows). Ammo was still readily available, we just had to pay more for it.

Phase II began with Dubya’s Grand South Asian Conquest. Ammo disappeared from store shelves as the manufacturers switched over production to satisfy the feral federal government’s demands. Police departments were forced to cancel firearms training and qualification due to uncertain ammo supply. Prices increased sharply.

Phase III, of course, began the day after the 2008 federal elections. Prices skyrocketed, and still stores and ranges had to resort to rationing ammunition sales.

Phase IV will commence soon, as O-BOMB-A! attempts to play Alexander to Dubya’s Philip. “I am Yeswecanias, King of Kings! Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and tremble!” I’d stock up now if I were you (and I am).

In another of those, “Trust us, we’re from the government” moments, Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sibelius assured Americans the new H1N1 vaccine is perfectly safe:

Look for swine flu to be another “unprecedented circumstance” justifying Federal lies.

It’s too bad Plaxico Burress didn’t read this before he went to the club. Instead, he’s been kicked off his team, deprived of his livelihood, and sentenced to two years in prison (New York’s taxpayers will get the bill) for the non-crime of accidentally shooting himself. Meanwhile, felons who actually hurt other people get off with probation and still get to collect their food stamps and SSI (how you can be too disabled to work but still earn a living as a burglar or mugger has never been satisfactorily explained) checks.

Seriously, your holster shouldn’t be an afterthought and is no place to cheap out. As with most things, you get what you pay for. A good holster is both more secure and faster on the draw than the cheap alternatives, as well as more comfortable and concealable.

The Encyclopedia of Bullseye Pistol is an online resource dedicated to the sport and discipline of Bullseye Pistol Competition. Bullseye Pistol is a formal, highly technical approach to shooting. It is shot one-handed, unlike more modern combat-oriented training and competition. The course of fire is described in the NRA manual:

NRA conventional pistol competition consists of firing slow, timed, and rapid fire. This is done at 50 and 25 yards outdoors and almost exclusively at 50 feet indoors. Generally an outdoor match will consist of 20 shots, slow fire at 50 yards (2 10-shot strings, 10 minutes per string), 20 shots, timed fire at 25 yards (4 5-shot strings, 20 seconds per string), 20 shots, rapid fire at 25 yards (4 5-shot strings, 10 seconds per string), and the National Match Course (10-shots, slow fire at 50 yards, 10-shots timed fire, and 10-shots rapid fire). This match consists of 90-shots for a possible aggregate total of 900 points. For a 2700 aggregate this match is fired once with each gun; .22 caliber rimfire, centerfire, and .45 caliber. Many match programs call for only one or two guns, that is a 900 or 1800 aggregate.

Most indoor tournaments are fired with .22 caliber rimfire only for a 900 aggregate. However, some indoor matches use all guns for a complete 2700 aggregate.
